Google Unveils New Tools to Enhance Data Control and Online Safety

Google has introduced a series of new features aimed at providing users with increased control over their personal information and enhancing online safety. The updates encompass tools for data management, family controls, and explicit content policies.

Streamlining Data Management

Last year’s launch of the “Results about you” tool allowed users to request the removal of search results containing specific personal data. The tool has now undergone significant enhancements. A dashboard has been added to notify users when their contact information appears in search results. This enables users to request the removal of such data directly from the tool. Google will also notify users of new search results containing their contact information.

The “Results about you” tool can be accessed through the Google app or via goo.gle/resultsaboutyou. While currently available in English for U.S. users, Google is working on expanding its language and location availability.

Advancing Family Controls

To prevent inadvertent exposure to explicit content in search results, Google is introducing a default SafeSearch blurring setting. This setting will automatically blur explicit and graphically violent content, with the option for users to disable it at their discretion. However, such disabling may be restricted by guardians or school network administrators. Moreover, Google is facilitating access to parental controls within Search by providing direct access through relevant search queries.

Revised Policies on Explicit Images

Google’s existing policy allows the removal of non-consensual explicit imagery from search results. Building upon this, users can now request the removal of their own explicit images from search results. This policy does not cover explicit content that is currently being monetized. Google has simplified the process of submitting removal requests for various content categories, aiming to offer users better control over their online presence.

It is important to note that while content removal from Google Search will not erase it from other search engines or the broader internet, the revised policies intend to empower users to manage their digital footprint more effectively.
