HUAWEI unveils nova Y72 with customisable ‘X Button’

Chinese electronics giant HUAWEI has unveiled its latest mid-range smartphone, the nova Y72, which features an innovative “X Button” on the side of the device for quick access to key apps and functions.

The X Button allows users to set up customisable shortcuts via a single click, double click or long press. For example, you could set up Google Maps to instantly launch with a double click of the button, enabling quicker access compared to manually unlocking the phone and searching for the navigation app.

Other potential uses touted by HUAWEI include:

Single Click: Brings up a customisable menu of frequently-used apps
Double Click: Provides immediate access to an essential app like the camera
Long Press: Opens a less frequently-used but still important app or function

According to HUAWEI, the main benefits of integrating navigation apps with the X Button are enhanced safety, efficiency and convenience while driving. The streamlined process to launch maps could reduce visual and physical distractions for drivers trying to navigate safely.

Additional specs for the nova Y72 include:

  • Side-mounted fingerprint sensor integrated into power button
  • 6.75-inch HD+ display
  • 50 MP High-Res Camera (f/1.8 aperture) + 2 MP Macro Camera
  • 8 MP Selfie Camera (f/2.0 aperture)
  • 128GB storage

The nova Y72 is now on sale in South Africa through HUAWEI’s website and local carriers.
