If that wasn’t unsettling enough, this grim visage bears an uncanny resemblance to clues from a string of unsolved murders from nearly two decades ago.

At the centre of this macabre tale is the titular Emio, an urban legend killer said to grant his victims “a smile that will last forever”. It’s a premise that wouldn’t feel out of place in a Japanese horror film, blending the psychological tension of a detective story with the creeping dread of folklore come to life.

Sakamoto, serving as the game’s producer, has been intimately involved in crafting this twisted narrative. From the foundational plot elements to the minutiae of script and cutscenes, his fingerprints are all over this new instalment. In a recently released developer chat video, Sakamoto offers tantalising glimpses into the game’s creation, hinting at the depths of mystery awaiting players.

For those unfamiliar with the Famicom Detective Club series, it’s worth noting that this isn’t a complete reinvention. The franchise got a fresh coat of paint in 2021 with remakes of “The Missing Heir” and “The Girl Who Stands Behind” for the Switch. These updates introduced a new generation to the series’ blend of visual novel storytelling and point-and-click investigation.

“Emio – The Smiling Man” looks to build on this foundation while posing some truly unnerving questions. Has a long-dormant serial killer resurfaced, or is this the work of a copycat? Did the urban legend of the Smiling Man inspire these crimes, or vice versa? It’s up to players to piece together the clues and separate fact from fiction.

While the game’s August release might seem at odds with its horror elements, there’s something deliciously unsettling about unravelling a chilling mystery as summer fades into autumn. Nintendo’s willingness to explore darker territory with this beloved cult series is a refreshing move, potentially opening the door for more mature narratives on the family-friendly platform.

In this game, up to four players can team up and journey to Planet Popstar to help a mysterious traveller named Magolor repair his ship. Along the way, you’ll explore colourful worlds, defeat enemies, and use different abilities to progress through the game.

The game introduces new features, such as Helper Magolor, an assist mode in the main adventure, updated visuals, and amiibo functionality. You can also play as iconic Kirby characters such as King Dedede, Meta Knight, and Bandana Waddle Dee in co-op mode.

One of the highlights of the game is the variety of abilities available to players. You can use Super Abilities, Copy Abilities, and new additions like the Mecha and Sand Abilities, as well as the returning Festival Ability to overcome challenges and defeat bosses.

The original Switch was launched in March 2017, making the Switch Lite the first major addition to the popular console range. Unlike the original which offers three gameplay modes and removable Joy-Con controllers, the Lite has integrated controls, no kickstand and doesn’t support video output to a TV.

While it might seem more limiting than the original, the Lite is lighter, has a proper D-pad and feels more sturdy according to The Verge.

The new device has a 5.5-inch touch-display making it smaller than the 6.2-inch display found on its sibling and has improved battery life. Nintendo says that you’ll be able to play all games in the Nintendo Switch library that support handheld mode but some games will have restrictions* and will warn you if it’s not compatible with the Switch Lite. Physical game packaging will also have notifications advising if the title is compatible.

The Switch Lite will be available in three colours at launch: yellow, grey and turquoise, as well as a limited Nintendo Switch Lite Zacian & Zamazenta Edition console on 8^th November. The limited edition console will feature cyan and magenta buttons and illustrations of the two new Legendary Pokémon from the upcoming Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield games.

The Nintendo Switch Lite Zacian & Zamazenta Edition console will be available while supplies last. The Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield games are available 15^th November for all Nintendo Switch consoles
