Amazon.co.za expands with local businesses through ‘Shop Mzansi’

Amazon.co.za has launched ‘Shop Mzansi’, a dedicated storefront showcasing South African products across a wide array of categories, including toys, home appliances, outdoor equipment, and beauty. The initiative aims to promote local businesses, connecting them with millions of online customers nationwide and highlighting the country’s entrepreneurial talent.

Featuring over 160 brands, ‘Shop Mzansi’ celebrates both emerging and established South African companies. Robert Koen, Amazon’s managing director for Sub-Saharan Africa, noted, “We are excited and proud to celebrate National Heritage Day with the launch of a distinctively curated store on Amazon.co.za to promote innovative South African products across a wide range of categories.”

One of the standout sellers is Heartfelt, a community-driven business that employs women from the rural village of Makapanstad. Heartfelt creates handmade felt toys, accessories, and home decorations, and its founders are hopeful the platform will help them scale. “Our goal is to continue spreading the love and create more jobs for women across South Africa,” said co-founders Martha Letsoalo and Julie Hadley.

Other participating businesses include Tiger Lily Tots, which specialises in custom baby accessories, and King Kong Leather, which produces full-grain leather bags and belts in Cape Town. Each brand tells a unique story, with products rooted in South Africa’s rich culture and traditions.

The launch of ‘Shop Mzansi’ is part of Amazon’s broader strategy to support small businesses. Globally, more than 60% of Amazon’s sales come from independent sellers. Through Amazon’s fulfilment services, local sellers can offer efficient delivery and reach a broader customer base.

Suzelle Abe, Head of Amazon Marketplace for Sub-Saharan Africa, remarked, “This is a proud moment for us as we honour local entrepreneurs. The curated store helps South African businesses grow while also offering the potential for global expansion.”

By spotlighting local talent and innovation, ‘Shop Mzansi’ is set to drive substantial growth for South African businesses, offering them a powerful platform to thrive in a competitive digital marketplace.
