Huawei has introduced the Mate X6, its latest entry in the foldable smartphone market, during the “Unfold the Classic” launch event in Dubai. Set to arrive in South Africa in mid-April 2025, the Mate X6 promises to redefine the foldable experience through durability, innovative design, and a cutting-edge camera system.
The Mate X6 stands out for its robust engineering. Its external display is protected by Huawei’s 2nd Generation Kunlun Glass, offering 25 times better drop resistance compared to earlier models. The internal display is strengthened with a carbon fibre inner plate, while an aviation-grade aluminium frame adds further durability without increasing weight. At the heart of the device is a multi-dimensional hinge designed for smooth operation and long-term reliability.
Visual performance is another key focus. The Mate X6 is equipped with OLED displays on both the exterior and interior, supporting a 120 Hz adaptive refresh rate for fluid transitions. The large internal display provides an immersive space for multitasking, gaming, and watching content, delivering a seamless user experience.
Camera innovation takes centre stage with a 50MP Ultra Aperture Camera, featuring a ten-size adjustable physical aperture (F1.0 to F4.0). This flexibility enables precise control over depth of field and light intake, producing high-quality images in diverse lighting conditions. Huawei’s Ultra Chroma technology further enhances colour accuracy, offering 120% improvement for lifelike results.
Richard Yu, Chairman of Huawei Consumer Business Group, described the Mate X6 as “a breakthrough technology from the inside out, bringing consumers a truly innovative foldable screen experience.”
The device will be available in three colours — Nebula Grey, Nebula Red, and Black — with only Nebula Grey confirmed for the South African market. While local pricing has not yet been disclosed, the Mate X6 reinforces Huawei’s intent to dominate the foldable smartphone category.
The Mate X6 was unveiled alongside other devices, including the nova 13 series, FreeBuds Pro 4, and MatePad 11.5, each highlighting Huawei’s drive to innovate across its product range.
