Melon Mobile Launches South Africa’s First Fully Digital MVNO

Melon Mobile, a new player in South Africa’s mobile industry, has launched the country’s first fully digital Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO). The company is set to disrupt the mobile industry, particularly in the pre-paid segment, by offering consumers control and flexibility over their mobile plans.

According to the founder and CEO of Melon Mobile, Calvin Collett, the company has built a service that puts the consumer first by giving them the freedom to choose their monthly data, voice, and text needs, without locking them into anything. The service offers flexibility, value, and simplicity, which are key features that South Africans are looking for.

Melon Mobile’s fully customisable mobile subscription service allows users to build their own plan monthly or select a plan that works best for them. They can order a SIM and have it delivered to their doorstep, move to Melon, and port their number on the same day. Additionally, the company offers a 3-step process to self-RICA on the app and a “Try Before You Buy” plan that includes 1GB data, 100 voice minutes, and 100 texts, all for free. Data, voice, and texts never expire as long as the user has a fully paid and valid data subscription in place.

Everything is done through the app, so there’s no need to go to stores or wait in queues, offering a hassle-free experience. South Africans can literally “go their own way” with their monthly mobile plan.

According to Collett, the company scrutinised the mobile industry and found solutions to everything they didn’t like about it.
