A new collaboration between Piceasoft and NorthLadder plans to address the growing issue of electronic waste from discarded mobile devices. The partnership, announced at Mobile World Congress 2024, combines Piceasoft’s mobile device lifecycle management platform with NorthLadder’s trade-in services to simplify and improve trade-ins for consumers.
Over 5 billion mobile phones are discarded every year, contributing over 50 million tonnes of electronic waste annually. Facilitating mobile trade-ins provides a way to extend device lifecycles and prevent usable phones from being scrapped prematurely. However, barriers like lack of access, complexity, and unfair pricing have inhibited the growth of phone trade-in programs.
Piceasoft’s upgraded Picea® Online platform enables automatic mobile device identification and diagnostics to accurately value trade-ins across sales channels with price guarantees. By integrating NorthLadder’s pricing and logistics capabilities, customers can rely on transparent, fair valuations when trading in devices.
“Currently, the major bottlenecks holding back the device trade-in sector come from the lack of access to trade-in options from vendors, the complexity of currently available solutions, and the lack of transparency, which causes huge variations in the device grading process and low valuations for the consumers for their devices,” explained Piceasoft CEO Kristian Järnefelt.
The simplified trade-in experience aims to build consumer confidence and loyalty by ensuring optimal value. It also allows mobile operators and retailers to efficiently run trade-in services driving higher sales and customer satisfaction. As more devices are sustainably reused rather than scrapped, this tackles the urgent e-waste crisis.
With 9.5% growth predicted in the US$282 million used phone market, establishing effective trade-in programs is critical according to NorthLadder CEO Sandeep Shetty: “Simplicity and transparency are critical to propelling device lifecycle solutions forward.”
