Platō launches SA’s first bank card-linked loyalty app with Yoyo

If you’re still collecting loyalty stamps on a piece of cardboard, you might want to sit down for this. Platō, the South African café brand that’s quietly taking over the country one flat white at a time, has launched a bank card-linked loyalty system that finally does what we’ve all wanted loyalty to do.

No QR codes. No sign-up hurdles. No awkward moments at the till. You tap your card, you get 5% cashback. It reflects automatically in the Platō app. That’s it.

The new system, which went live on 1 June, is powered by local rewards tech company Yoyo and integrates with Yoco — the point-of-sale provider already used at Platō cafés. Once you register your mobile number the first time you tap, every payment after that earns you cashback, with no extra steps. If you haven’t downloaded the app yet, you’ll get an SMS prompting you to unlock your balance. It’s clean, simple and frictionless.

Within just three weeks of launch, over 30% of in-store transactions were already flowing through the new system — more than double South Africa’s industry standard for loyalty app adoption. That’s not a blip. It’s a sign.

“We set out to build something bigger than coffee,” says Platō co-founder and CEO Stephan Bredell. “Even our loyalty system had to be better, smarter, more meaningful.”

It’s not just better — it’s what loyalty should have been all along. The tech is invisible. The benefit is instant. And the whole thing works with every major card, from Visa and Mastercard to AMEX, Apple Pay and Samsung Pay.

Yoyo has been powering loyalty behind the scenes for years, but this is the first time it has linked rewards directly to your bank card — and let that card do all the heavy lifting.

“People kept asking us for loyalty without the extra steps,” says Bevan Ducasse, CEO of Yoyo. “So we made the bank card the loyalty card.”

The idea isn’t new, but its execution is rare. And the response shows there’s a strong appetite for this kind of model, especially when cashback is the reward. Research consistently shows South Africans prefer instant value over points or vouchers, and this is as instant as it gets.

Platō isn’t just experimenting. It’s scaling. The brand already roasts 13 tonnes of beans and serves more than 400,000 espressos every month, with 98 stores across the country and a plan to hit 150 by year-end.

To get started:

  1. Tap your card at any Platō café.
  2. Register your mobile number on the Yoco terminal (once off).
  3. Download the Platō app.
  4. Start earning 5% cashback automatically.

The Platō app is available now on iOS and Google Play.

The move doesn’t just modernise loyalty for coffee shops. It shows what’s possible when loyalty stops being a separate experience and becomes part of the one you’re already having.
