Sony’s WH-1000XM6 gets a new Olive Gray finish in South Africa

Sony has added a new Olive Gray finish to its WH-1000XM6 noise-cancelling headphones in South Africa, expanding the colour choices for its flagship over-ear headphones without changing the hardware underneath. The new finish joins Sony’s more recent Sand Pink and Sandstone options and leans into the muted, earthy colours that have increasingly appeared across its premium audio range.

Sony says Olive Gray is intended to work across both professional and everyday settings, which is a more useful way of looking at the update than trying to pretend a new colour makes this a new pair of headphones. Mahesh Kodoth, General Manager for Personal Entertainment at Sony Middle East and Africa, says the company continues to see demand for products designed to work across different use cases, with Olive Gray intended to look equally at home at work or on the move.

It’s a cosmetic update rather than a new version of the headphones, so anyone buying the Olive Gray model gets the same WH-1000XM6 Sony launched last year. The headphones largely retained the familiar design of their predecessor while making more substantial changes to noise cancellation, microphones and processing, including Sony’s QN3 processor and expanded microphone array, as detailed in our WH-1000XM6 launch coverage.

The WH-1000XM6 remains Sony’s flagship wireless noise-cancelling headphone, with the company continuing to position noise cancellation as one of its defining features. Sony describes the XM6 as offering the best noise cancellation in its category, although that claim comes with a specific qualification: it is based on Sony Corporation research conducted as of 1 June 2026, using IEC-compliant guidelines and comparing the top 10 brands by market share in the wireless noise-cancelling headband headphone category.

The rest of the hardware is unchanged. That means the Olive Gray version gets the same sound, noise cancellation and comfort features as the existing WH-1000XM6 models, rather than introducing a new specification or mid-cycle upgrade. Sony’s full product information is available on its South African WH-1000XM6 product page.

Colour updates can feel like fairly minor news, because they are. They do, however, make more sense on products such as premium headphones than they might on technology that spends most of its life in a pocket or on a desk. Over-ear headphones are worn visibly for hours at a time, often across work, commuting and travel, so the way they look becomes part of the buying decision in a way that isn’t entirely superficial.

That seems to be what Sony is leaning into with Olive Gray. Kodoth says the company believes the colour can convey sophistication in professional settings without looking overly formal in everyday use, following the earlier introduction of Smoky Pink and other less conventional finishes.

Olive Gray doesn’t give the WH-1000XM6 any new capabilities, and Sony isn’t pretending otherwise. It simply gives buyers who were already considering its flagship headphones another option beyond the more familiar black, silver and lighter finishes, which is probably all a colour update needs to do.
