The new Toyota RAV4: less crossover, more cross-training

The new Toyota RAV4 has landed. Again. Only this time, it didn’t just nip back from the gym with a protein shake and Bluetooth headphones. It came back with a six-pack, a brain upgrade and enough attitude to make the Fortuner sweat.

Unveiled in Japan under the banner Life is an adventure, the sixth-generation RAV4 is a proper reboot. Not a polite facelift. Not a badge tweak and slightly angrier headlights. This is Toyota finally leaning into the SUV arms race with something that feels fit to actually survive it.

Let’s get the serious stuff out the way. The new Toyota RAV4 now comes in two electrified flavours: Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) and Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV). The PHEV version is packing Toyota’s latest hybrid setup, with a high-output charger and more efficient battery. Translation: up to 150 km on electric power alone. That’s up from 95 km previously – and comfortably more than most commutes, even if you forget to plug in and have to dodge a morning load-shedding slot.

This PHEV doesn’t just sip electrons. It’s got more muscle too, with a 12% boost in motor output. Add vehicle-to-home power and DC fast charging, and you’ve got a car that can charge your fridge and your life – up to 80% battery in 30 minutes flat.

Prefer the hybrid? No problem. Quicker acceleration, a more agile gearbox and better throttle response make it ideal for cutting through traffic or getting a jump on the N1.

Big foot, big attitude

The outside? It looks ready for a fight. Or a family holiday. Or both. Toyota calls the new look “Big foot” – a nod to its chunkier tyres and taller stance. It’s part of three design themes: Big foot, Life-up (for off-road capability) and Utility (for space and practicality).

The interior is smarter too. The dashboard sits 40 mm lower for better visibility, while the boot has grown to 749 litres. The centre console flips from armrest to tray, and the new cabin layout – what Toyota calls “island architecture” – clusters your controls where they belong.

Pick your persona: Core, Adventure or GR Sport

Toyota offers three flavours of RAV4:

  • Core – the smooth city commuter with hammerhead styling and calm confidence
  • Adventure – the off-road warrior with wide stance and tougher detailing
  • GR Sport – the wild child, tuned by Toyota’s motorsport crew with sharper handling and athletic suspension

Meet your first software-defined SUV

Here’s the twist. This is Toyota’s first vehicle built on its new Arene software platform, developed by Woven by Toyota. This isn’t just about apps or screens – the car actually updates itself over the air, learns from your habits and responds faster to your voice.

It also comes with the latest Toyota Safety Sense kit, including an emergency stop system (if you fall asleep or lose consciousness) and enhanced acceleration control to avoid embarrassing, and possibly expensive, moments.

We don’t yet have local specs or pricing – those will arrive closer to launch – but this sixth-generation RAV4 is clearly gunning for top spot in the midsize SUV war. Smarter, faster, better connected and finally electrified in a meaningful way, the new Toyota RAV4 is no longer just the sensible choice. It’s the clever one with teeth.
