Xiaomi introduced its 14T smartphone to the South African market last night, offering a combination of AI-driven features and enhanced photography capabilities. The launch is part of the company’s ongoing strategy to expand its presence in South Africa, a region where smartphone adoption is rapidly increasing.
The 14T, featuring Leica optics, is particularly focused on improving low-light photography. Using the AI LM computational photography platform, the device is designed to reduce noise and improve image clarity, making it suitable for night photography. This capability is aimed at users who require better performance from their smartphone cameras in difficult lighting conditions, such as those found in urban areas after dark.
Xiaomi has also equipped the 14T with a range of AI features that extend beyond photography. These include tools for transcribing meetings, editing images, and providing real-time translations, functions that are increasingly important for professionals and frequent travellers. Additionally, the phone includes Circle to Search, a feature developed in partnership with Google that allows users to perform instant searches within apps.
The Xiaomi 14T comes with a 6.67-inch AMOLED display, offering a 144Hz refresh rate. The device is powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 8300-Ultra processor, providing sufficient processing power for multitasking and media consumption. Audio is supported by Dolby Atmos technology, enhancing the phone’s appeal as a device for entertainment purposes.
The device also features an IP68 water and dust resistance rating, and is constructed using eco-friendly materials, reflecting Xiaomi’s growing focus on sustainability in its product design.
Prices for the Xiaomi 14T start at R799 per month at Vodacom, with availability through major retailers and Xiaomi stores. This pricing places it in competition with mid-to-high-range smartphones, positioning Xiaomi as a serious player in the South African market.
