Spotify’s ‘Mother of Music’ festival in Cape Town is set to spotlight the city’s thriving music scene, cementing its status as South Africa’s creative powerhouse. The four-day event, running from 5th to 8th September, aims to immerse attendees in an African Renaissance, highlighting emerging sounds, art, and culture.
Phiona Okumu, Spotify’s Head of Music for Sub-Saharan Africa, emphasises the city’s significance: “Cape Town is a melting pot of musical innovation, a place where new sounds and artists are constantly being discovered. MOM: Mother of Music is our tribute to this vibrant culture and a platform for unearthing new talents and fostering a community around them.”
The festival’s programme is a testament to Cape Town’s diverse musical landscape. Kicking off with “MOM First Thursdays”, the event will partner with local communities and venues to add Spotify’s touch through music platforming and collaboration. Subsequent days promise a mix of nostalgia and cutting-edge sounds, featuring a 90s-inspired rave, an ISYAADT party hosted by KDOLLAHZ, and collaborations with the Strictly Soul Community.
Music enthusiasts can look forward to live performances at iconic venues like Woodhead Parking and TEXAS. The lineup boasts a blend of established and emerging artists, including Hunter Rose, Kash CPT, Dee Koala, HONEYMOAN, Kay Faith, Ziggy4x, and SPINALL. In a nod to South African culture, the festival will also host a rugby watch party, combining sport and music in true local fashion.
The event culminates in Khayelitsha with a Sunday turnup and silent disco stage at RANDS Club, featuring DJ Abu. This finale underscores Spotify’s commitment to showcasing talent from various corners of the city.
To complement the live events, Spotify has curated a dedicated playlist that celebrates Cape Town’s diverse sounds. This digital offering allows music fans worldwide to experience the city’s rich musical heritage and its role in nurturing global music stars.
Accessibility is a key focus for the organisers, with a mix of free and ticketed events. A randomised allocation system will be used for ticketed events, with registered attendees advised to check their emails daily for notifications.
