Spotify’s Greasy Tunes: A Celebration of South African Music and Cuisine

Over the weekend, Johannesburg witnessed the exciting launch of Spotify’s Greasy Tunes, a month-long experiential pop-up event that combines South African food with music. Influencers and media flocked to the venue on Saturday, eager to immerse themselves in this unique celebration. Greasy Tunes not only showcases Spotify’s leading playlists but also highlights the diverse culture, community, and creators that make up South Africa’s music scene, all while offering delicious greasy South African meals.

The pop-up event pays homage to various cultural communities in Johannesburg, embracing their aesthetics and flavors. Taking inspiration from township kota cafes, the venue features outdoor table tennis tables strategically placed throughout. Mini pool tables and jenga sets adorn the tables, creating a vibrant atmosphere where guests can relax and enjoy the experience.

As guests settle into the cafe-style ambiance, they are treated to a selection of snacks that perfectly complement the setting. Nuts served in jars and rainbow mielie pops, affectionately known as “skopas,” grace the decorated tables. The menu showcases the fusion of cultures that characterizes South Africa, with favorites like pap infused with cheese and township-style slap chips drawing enthusiastic responses from attendees.

The opening night of Greasy Tunes featured captivating DJ sets and performances by renowned artists such as Yolophonik and Cornelius SA. They set the tone for the first week’s activities, which centered around celebrating South Africa’s vibrant house and dance music culture. The event, aptly named “Mint: Feast on South Africa’s Best Electronic Dance Music, House, and Afrotech,” was an immersive experience that engaged the senses and delighted the audience.

One of the highlights of the evening was a performance by Spirit in Motion, a group known for their energetic and spontaneous dance routines. They brought the Pantsula dance craze, commonly seen on the streets of Johannesburg, to life on stage. The audience was enthralled by their passion and talent, adding another layer of authenticity to the celebration.

Speaking at the launch, Jocelyne Muhutu-Remy, Spotify Sub-Saharan Africa Managing Director, emphasized the power of audio in spreading South African culture and trends. She expressed her excitement about Greasy Tunes, stating that it represents an expansion of Spotify’s influence by blending music and cuisine in a beloved city that resonates with countless individuals.
