Discovery Vitality Announces Partnership with Checkers

Discovery Vitality has unveiled an exciting partnership with Checkers and Checkers Sixty60 for its Vitality HealthyFood benefit. This move comes as a response to the evolving shopping habits of consumers. In addition to this collaboration, the HealthyFood benefit is undergoing enhancements, giving members the option to choose between an in-store and an online grocery partner, with the potential to earn an impressive 75% cashback on healthy food items from both platforms.

The collaboration with Checkers is seen as a significant step towards encouraging more Discovery Vitality members to make healthier food choices. Dinesh Govender, CEO of Discovery Vitality, expressed his delight at this new partnership, highlighting the program’s long history of rewarding positive behavior change. He noted, “Vitality’s HealthyFood benefit has been rewarding positive behavior change for almost 15 years. The addition of Checkers as a partner promises an even greater health impact.”

Neil Schreuder, Chief Strategy and Innovation Officer at Shoprite, which owns Checkers, shared his enthusiasm for the collaboration, saying, “We are obsessed with providing transparent and unrivalled value to our customers. We are incredibly excited that Checkers and Sixty60 customers will be rewarded for making healthier food choices through our partnership with Discovery Vitality. The rise of Sixty60 also means that consumers can now get access to healthy food on-demand, making healthier living more effortless.”

The Rise of Grocery Delivery Services

The partnership with Checkers and the HealthyFood benefit updates come at a time when grocery delivery services are witnessing a surge in popularity. Many households now utilise a combination of in-store and online channels for their grocery shopping. In fact, this year saw a remarkable 34% of Vitality members ordering groceries online at least weekly, reflecting the increasing reliance on online grocery purchasing due to its convenience.

What’s interesting is that nearly 60% of Vitality members have different retailer preferences when shopping in-store versus online. To cater to this diversity of preferences, Discovery Vitality is providing its members with the flexibility to select both an in-store and an online partner, thereby maximising their HealthyFood rewards.

Introducing Vitality Fitness: A Game-Changer in Exercise

For over 25 years, Vitality’s fitness benefits have played a crucial role in motivating hundreds of thousands of members to adopt healthier lifestyles. In its ongoing commitment to evolving and meeting the personalised fitness needs of its members, Discovery Vitality is set to introduce Vitality Fitness, a groundbreaking platform to find and book exercise classes in 2024.

The Vitality Fitness platform is designed to offer Vitality members extensive access, flexibility, and variety, empowering them to achieve their exercise goals. The platform will offer four key features:

  1. Booking classes at over 400 fitness facilities nationwide, with Vitality members enjoying 24 free visits annually and secure payment options.
  2. Instant access to Virgin Active or Planet Fitness gyms with a special activation fee of R499 and a 75% discount on monthly membership fees.
  3. Pay-as-you-go options with Virgin Active or Planet Fitness, including three free visits.
  4. Outdoor exercise opportunities such as running or cycling with Team Vitality, as well as a new partnership offering 20% off all Africa Padel bookings for padel enthusiasts.

Dinesh Govender emphasised the importance of these updates, stating, “The focus of the updates is to make healthy eating and exercise even more accessible, affordable, and attractive to Vitality members, and South Africans in general. A healthy diet and physical activity are significant contributors to living a longer and healthier life, so these additions help achieve Discovery’s core purpose of making people healthier and enhancing and protecting their lives.”

More Ways to Earn Physical Activity Points

To further encourage physical activity among its members, Vitality is expanding its physical activity points structure. It’s introducing a novel concept called “exercise snacking,” where 15 minutes of moderate or high-intensity workouts can earn members 100 Vitality points. Longer duration low-intensity workouts will also be rewarded with 200 and 300 Vitality points, aiming to promote and recognise endurance training.

The enhancements to the Vitality HealthyFood benefit will be rolled out in late 2024, promising a positive impact on the health and well-being of South Africans.
