Front and back of the Huawei Mate 40 Pro

Huawei brings the Mate40 Pro to South Africa

There may be global chipset shortages and Huawei might be fighting an uphill battle thanks to the US ban but that’s not stopping the company from releasing devices and bringing them to South Africa.

While the world waits to see the rumoured P50 series, Huawei is bringing their current flagship, the HUAWEI Mate40 Pro, to South Africa from 1 April.

Design

Huawei phones are known for their industry-leading design and the Mate40 Pro continues this ethos with its Space Ring design and Mystic Silver and Black colourways. The front of the device features an ultra-curved Horizon Display, which curves at 88 degrees, which the company says allows for a “completely borderless and futuristic viewing experience.” Unike its predecessor, the Mate 30 Pro, the Mate40 Pro has physical buttons and virtual ones that can beused as the volume rocker.

Performance

The Mate40 Pro features the 5nm Kirin 9000 flagship SoC (system on chip), one of the industry’s most advanced and transistor-dense SoCs to date, and includes a 24-core Mali-G78 GPU.

The Kirin 9000 adopts a three-level power efficiency architecture, with one big core, three middle cores, and four small cores with clock frequencies as fast as 3.13GHz according to Huawei.

Huawei Mobile Services (HMS)

As has been the case for Huawei devices for the past two years, The Mate40 Pro does not have Google Mobile Services (HMS) but instead ships with Huawei Mobile Services (HMS). It is also preinstalled with HUAWEI AppGallery and the Petal Search widget, both as a gateway to over a million local apps like Capitec, FNB, ABSA, Nedbank, Standard Bank, Showmax, Bolt, Takealot, Superbalist and Zando.

If you rely on Google services such as Gmail, Google Search, Google Drive, Google Photos and Google Maps, there are ways to get some form of access to them but functionality is not as smooth or integrated as it is with Huawei’s P30 series or any other handset with GMS.

Having said this, Microsoft services function fairly well on HMS devices with Outlook, Edge and OneDrive able to work without compromise on HMS devices including the Mate40 Pro.
