rain has announced the launch of its super-fast 5G network in Cape Town. The service, which is already available in Gauteng, will be available to Capetonians from 18 July. Khaya Dlanga, rain’s CMO notes: “This means rain is able to offer the widest 5G coverage in the country.” rain joins both MTN and Vodacom in offering 5G services in select parts of the country.
rain’s 5G packages
rain 5G offers super-fast unlimited internet from as little as R699 per month. Two packages are available, both with unlimited data. The standard package (at R699) caps speeds at 30Mbps and allows a single HD video stream. The premium package, at R999 per month, has no speed limiting and offers multiple HD+ quality streams. Premium users can expect average speeds exceeding 200Mbps.
Both the standard and premium packages include a free-to-use 5G router.
rain’s 5G routers are quick and easy to install, so you’ll be able to stream your favourite shows right away. Dlanga says: “Clients can order the 5G package on www.rain.co.za and have the router delivered for free straight to their door.”
Dlanga also notes that rain has built additional sites in Gauteng in recent months and that coverage continues to expand. “Furthermore, rain hopes to blanket more metro areas though out South Africa in the next 18 months.”
5G is a foundational component of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) and rain continues to play its part in ensuring that South Africa benefits from this revolutionary technology. Dlanga says: “By rolling out the most affordable 5G unlimited products in the market, rain is playing its part in building the 5G ecosystem in the country. 5G can significantly increase ultra-broadband penetration in the country which supports economic growth and will enable South Africans to remain productive by working from home during the COVID-19 pandemic. In future, this 5G ecosystem will be the underpinning of the development of smart cities, smart health care systems, remote working through VR technology, self-driving cars and many more aspects of the 4IR.”
Currently, the only 5G enabled phones available in South Africa are the LG Velvet, LG V60 ThinQ, LG V50 ThinQ, and the Huawei P40 and Huawei P40 Pro, with a lower cost 5G enabled Huawei phone expected in the coming weeks.
