The Sony RX1R III announcement brings a flagship 61 MP full‑frame compact camera with AI autofocus and green packaging. The third generation of Sony’s RX1R series features a 61-megapixel Exmor R sensor, BIONZ XR engine and ZEISS Sonnar T* 35 mm f/2 lens inside a compact magnesium alloy body designed for performance and sustainability.
The low-pass filter has been removed, and the AR-coated sensor pairs with precision optics to deliver exceptional image clarity. Sony has added 693 phase-detection AF points, covering nearly 80 percent of the frame. The same AI-powered subject recognition found in Sony’s Alpha range enables advanced eye, head and body tracking across both stills and video.
While the RX1R III has a fixed lens, its Step Crop Shooting feature allows for 35 mm, 50 mm and 70 mm framing through quick toggles or later adjustment in RAW post-production. A dedicated macro ring lets users focus as close as 20 cm, adding another layer of versatility.
Twelve built-in Creative Looks offer distinct aesthetic options for both photos and video. These include FL2, which creates a nostalgic, muted palette, and FL3, which boosts saturation and contrast. It’s a streamlined way to shape your visuals without needing extra post-production tools.

The body is built from lightweight magnesium alloy and designed for intuitive control. A flatter top layout, reworked grip, and built-in Multi Interface shoe keep the profile tight and functional. The 2.36-million-dot OLED EVF offers strong contrast with a 0.70x magnification, although some may find the lack of tilting functionality limiting.
Battery life supports up to 300 images on the NP-FW50. USB-C PD charging is available, and users can connect power banks or external sources for extended shooting sessions.
Environmental impact was clearly considered. Sony manufactures the RX1R III in facilities powered by 100 percent renewable energy, and it arrives in plastic-free packaging made from Sony’s Original Blended Material. It also includes accessibility tools like a screen reader and display magnification to support visually impaired users.
The RX1R III will be available in South Africa from September 2025. Local pricing has not yet been announced. This model is aimed at creators who demand full-frame performance without needing to carry a full mirrorless system.
