The Chery Tiggo 7 Executive turns up the safety dial on a family SUV that already works

The Chery Tiggo 7 Executive adds seven airbags, a full driver-assistance suite, and a long list of comfort upgrades to the formula that’s made the Tiggo 7 range a consistent performer in South Africa’s family SUV segment.

Chery South Africa has introduced a new derivative of the Tiggo 7 that sits above the existing Prime and targets buyers who want more than just value for money. The Executive is a direct response to customer feedback, and it makes a fairly compelling case for spending a bit more. Crucially, what’s changed is meaningful rather than cosmetic.

Seven airbags and a proper ADAS suite

Safety is the headline story here. Where the Tiggo 7 Prime offered a reasonable but limited safety package, the Executive steps up to seven airbags. That figure includes full-length side curtain airbags and a front centre airbag, providing significantly broader occupant coverage in a serious collision.

Alongside the airbags comes a proper driver-assistance package: lane departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, blind-spot detection, adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, and autonomous emergency braking. It’s a comprehensive list that puts the Executive in good company among similarly priced family SUVs from more established brands. An electronic child safety lock rounds out the safety additions, which is exactly the kind of practical detail that matters to buyers with young families.

A surround-view system with genuine substance

The new model also introduces a surround-view monitoring system that’s worth talking about on its own terms. Powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 chip, it combines an overhead bird’s-eye view with an underbody visual function that helps with parking and low-speed manoeuvring in tighter spots. Whether you’re navigating a busy shopping centre car park or judging the height of a kerb, it’s a feature that earns its place.

Comfort upgrades that feel deliberate, not padded

Chery hasn’t just bolted safety features onto the Prime and called it a day. The Executive also gains a power-operated panoramic sunroof, a power tailgate, synthetic leather upholstery, and a 50 W wireless smartphone charger. Front seats are electronically adjustable and feature both heating and ventilation, which is a meaningful addition in a country where temperatures swing hard in either direction.

The infotainment setup carries over from the Prime, and that’s not a criticism. The dual 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth, Intelligent Voice Command, and a six-speaker sound system are all present and accounted for. There’s no need to fix what isn’t broken.

The drivetrain stays the same

Power comes from the same turbocharged 1.5-litre petrol engine that does duty across the Tiggo 7 range, producing 108 kW and 210 N.m of torque. Drive goes to the front wheels through a six-speed dual-clutch transmission, and combined-cycle fuel consumption is rated at 6.9 L/100 km. It’s a modest but adequate powertrain that suits the family SUV brief without pretending to be something it isn’t.

The Executive does distinguish itself visually with high-gloss 18-inch alloy wheels that lend it a slightly more upmarket look compared to the Prime. LED headlights remain standard, consistent with the rest of the line-up.

What Verene Petersen says about it

“The Tiggo 7 Executive reflects exactly where the market is heading,” said Verene Petersen, National Marketing Manager at Chery South Africa. “Customers are looking for more than just style and value. They want intelligent safety, modern convenience and features that make everyday driving easier. This model is our response to those expectations, and another expression of Chery’s commitment to delivering safety without compromise.”

It’s a quote that doubles as a mission statement, and the Executive’s specification sheet backs it up reasonably well.

Value, warranty, and what you’re actually getting

The Chery Tiggo 7 Executive is priced at R459,900. That includes a 5-year/150 000 km vehicle warranty, a 10-year/1 million km engine warranty for the first registered owner, and a 5-year/60 000 km service plan. Chery has also introduced a Trans-national Warranty Programme under its Chery Family Care umbrella, which allows owners to access warranty support at authorised Chery service centres across global markets. For families who travel frequently across Africa or who might relocate internationally, that’s a genuinely useful addition.

At this price point, the Executive faces competition from an increasingly crowded field of value-oriented family SUVs. The 2025 Renault Duster, for example, represents a similarly considered approach to the segment, pairing rugged capability with updated tech at a competitive price. The difference is that the Executive leans harder into occupant safety and cabin comfort rather than off-road credibility, which is probably the smarter play for its target audience.

The Tiggo 7 Executive isn’t trying to reinvent the SUV. It’s trying to be the most sensible, safest, and most comfortable version of itself. On the evidence, it does that well.
