Sony unveils world’s first F2 standard zoom G Master lens

Sony has introduced the FE 28-70mm F2 G Master (SEL2870GM), the first standard zoom in their premium lens lineup to feature a constant F2 aperture. This new lens provides a significant light-gathering advantage over traditional F2.8 professional zooms while covering the most frequently used focal lengths.

According to the announcement, this new G Master combines the brightness typically reserved for prime lenses with a versatile zoom range. The lens promises to deliver the exceptional resolution and distinctive bokeh characteristics that professional photographers have come to expect from Sony’s top-tier optics.

Breaking New Ground in Optical Design

The optical construction features three XA (extreme aspherical) elements, manufactured using Sony’s proprietary techniques. These elements ensure corner-to-corner sharpness even at F2 throughout the zoom range. A floating focus mechanism maintains this sharpness down to a minimum focus distance of 0.38 metres, regardless of focal length.

Sony’s latest Nano AR Coating II effectively suppresses flare and ghosting, while internal reflection control provides additional flare resistance in challenging lighting conditions. The newly developed 11-blade aperture unit works in concert with the XA elements to produce natural, smooth bokeh. Super ED and ED glass elements effectively minimize chromatic aberration, ensuring clean image output across all shooting scenarios.

Compact Yet Capable

Despite its bright constant aperture, Sony has managed to keep the lens remarkably portable. At 92.9 x 139.8mm and weighing 918g, it’s an engineering achievement that doesn’t compromise on professional features. The lens includes customizable focus hold buttons, an iris lock switch, and an adjustable zoom ring torque – all packed into a surprisingly manageable form factor.

Advanced Autofocus System

Four XD (extreme dynamic) linear motors, coupled with Sony’s latest focusing algorithms, form the core of the lens’s AF system. This combination delivers precise focus tracking with instant response – crucial for wedding photography, sports events, and other situations where missing a moment isn’t an option. The lens fully supports the α9 III’s 120 frames per second continuous shooting with AF/AE tracking, maintaining focus even during zoom adjustments.

Professional Video Features

For videographers, the lens offers several key features. Focus breathing is effectively suppressed, enabling smooth focus transitions. The lens is optimized for high frame rate shooting, supporting 4K 120p and FHD 240p recording. The XD linear motors and new aperture unit operate silently, and the lens supports α body breathing compensation with compatible camera bodies.

Built for Professional Use

Weather sealing includes silicone gaskets on all buttons and switches, a rubber-sealed mount, and comprehensive sealing throughout the lens barrel. The front element features a fluorine coating for easy cleaning and maintenance. The 86mm filter thread is complemented by a thoughtfully designed lens hood with a window for easy variable filter adjustments.

Availability and Support

The Sony FE 28-70mm F2 G Master will be available from December 2024.

For professional photographers and videographers seeking a versatile standard zoom that doesn’t compromise on light-gathering ability or image quality, this new G Master lens represents a significant addition to Sony’s E-mount lineup. It combines the convenience of a zoom with brightness traditionally associated with prime lenses, all while maintaining the high standards of resolution and bokeh quality that the G Master series is known for.
