Samsung’s Galaxy G Fold looks wild in new leaks

Samsung Galaxy G Fold leaks suggest a triple fold phone that could cost nearly R70 000. And yes, Samsung might actually be serious.

According to Android Authority, leaked animation renders show the Galaxy G Fold opening into a massive three-panel display. It folds not once, but twice. Think pamphlet, not book. Think tech origami.

It’s not the first time Samsung has teased this idea. The company has showcased trifold concepts at trade shows for years. But now, with these renders showing One UI 8 running across a 7.8-inch internal display and stylus support built in, it looks like the company is ready to make it real.

Specs from another leak suggest flagship internals. Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy, 12GB of RAM, 256GB or 512GB of storage, and a 4600mAh battery. These are the specs you’d expect from a top-tier Android device, but stuffed into a body with two hinges and three screens.

The big surprise might be the price. Internationally, it is rumoured to start at $1,799. But if the Galaxy Z Fold 6 launched at over R40 000 in South Africa, the Galaxy G Fold could push well beyond that. In fact, local pricing might land closer to Huawei’s trifold, the Mate XT, which hovers near R70 000. That is not a typo. You could buy a used car for that.

Samsung is expected to launch the G Fold at its Unpacked event in New York on 9 July, alongside the Z Fold 7 and Z Flip 7 and potentially even a rumoured Z Flip FE. That’s a lot of hinges for one keynote.

The Verge has already noted that One UI 8 appears to be ready for the chaos of a triple display setup. But even if the software is polished, there are still big questions. Like how many people actually want a phone that unfolds like a map? How durable is a hinge that needs to work twice as hard? And what kind of market exists for R70 000 smartphones in a country where the cost of living keeps climbing?

The G Fold might be the most advanced foldable Samsung has ever made. It might also be the most unnecessary. But in the foldables arms race, practicality seems to be optional.
