Milk + Cookies Festival returns to Cape Town and Johannesburg in January

Milk + Cookies Festival will return to South Africa in January 2027, with events in Cape Town on 29 January and Johannesburg on 31 January. The organisers haven’t announced the venues, ticket prices or line-up yet, so there’s still a fair bit to learn before anyone can make plans.

Kaytranada headlined the festival’s South African debut in 2025, while Gunna led the 2026 edition. The organisers say the two editions drew more than 50,000 people between them. That change in headliners gives some idea of what Milk + Cookies means by its new line, “Never the same sound, always the same feeling”: it isn’t committing to one genre from year to year.

South African artists will be announced first, with the headliner to follow. The festival also plans another Music Week programme, bringing performances together with panels, workshops and events involving local food, fashion and design. We’ve seen that combination work on a smaller scale before, including when Spotify brought its Greasy Tunes music and food pop-up to Johannesburg.

Milk + Cookies says its 2026 edition supported more than 3,500 jobs across production, venues, hospitality and vending. It hasn’t explained how it counted those jobs, but the crews and local businesses involved are part of the festival’s footprint beyond the main stages. Who gets those opportunities in 2027 will become clearer as the programme takes shape.

For now, Cape Town is set for 29 January and Johannesburg for 31 January. The organisers say more details are coming in the next few weeks, and festivalgoers can sign up for updates in the meantime.
